The people at Nerf have decided that the time has come to update and improve some of their most classic blasters and this is pretty much how the new N-Strike Elite Series was born.
Although this new series does have some unique blasters to show for itself, it mostly consists of new versions of classic Nerf guns.
The main selling point of those updated blasters, apart from some aesthetic updates, is the fact that they now feature direct plunger firing mechanisms, instead of reverse plunger ones. This means that they have far greater range and better accuracy than their classic counterparts.
The Nerf N-Strike Elite Retaliator blaster is an updated version of the Recon CS-6 blaster. The Recon is by far one of the most popular Nerf guns ever made and it can be seen in the hands of most participants of any Nerf War! Is the Retaliator a worthy successor? Well, keep on reading my review and you will find out!
Overview
The first thing that you will notice about the Nerf N-Strike Elite Retaliator is the fact that it looks nothing like the Recon, or most Nerf guns for that matter. Instead of being colored bright yellow and orange and looking like a sci-fi gun, the Retaliator comes with a cool looking blue, grey and orange colour pattern and it looks a lot more realistic than its classic counterpart.
Like with all Elite Nerf guns however, what makes the Retaliator truly sign is what’s on its inside. It features a state of the art direct plunger firing mechanism that allows it to easily outperform all “regular” Nerf blasters.

Range
Like all N-Strike Elite blasters, the Retaliator has a far greater range than the vast majority of classic N-Strike blasters. This particular Elite Nerf gun has a firing range of an astounding fifty to sixty feet and that’s when fired flat and not at an angle, Firing at an angle will increase the range even more! When shot at an angle, the Retaliator can reach up to seventy-five feet.
Attaching the optional barrel extension accessory however will cause the range to drop 15 to 20 feet, but it will make it a lot more accurate and precise.
Rate of fire
The Nerf N-Strike Elite Retaliator is a semi automatic assault Nerf blaster, which means that it needs to be primed before its shot, just like its predecessor. That being said, with some practice you will be able to easily achieve a rate of fire of two darts per second, which is great for a semi auto. In other words, it should take you about six seconds to empty a full clip.
Ammo capacity
The Nerf N-Strike Elite Retaliator comes equipped with a very large capacity magazine that can take up to twelve darts, twice the number that the magazine of its predecessor could hold.
You can also hide a dart in a special compartment located at the handle, which means that you can have thirteen darts stored on and in it.
It should be noted however, that the Recon can hold an extra clip in its stock as well as an extra dart that can be hidden in the hole of the handle.
That being said, as far as I am concerned, magazine capacity always trumps carrying capacity.
What’s in the box?
The Nerf N-Strike Elite Retaliator contains the blaster itself, a stock, a foregrip, the 12 dart magazine and 12 Elite darts.
How does it fare against its predecessor?
When it comes to performance and features, the Retaliator beats the Recon every single time. However, the Recon has an edge over the Retaliator when it comes to the accessories that come bundled with it. While the Retaliator package contains pretty much just the gun and its darts, the Recon package also contains a light and aiming sight.
